New York State Photo Contest Winners Announced

In honor of International Year of Forests, The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Division of Lands and Forests kicked off the Celebrating New York's Forests Photo Contest. This contest was an effort to increase awareness of and appreciation for all types of forests, urban and rural, large and small, public and privately owned, across the state.

Announced December 1, 2011, the winning photos in 6 categories are:

Nature: Fiddleheads in the Forest by Joanne Hihn

Enjoying the Forest: Fishing the Mist by Michael Linse

Trees Where We Live: Home by Michael Linse

Forest Products: ADK Sunrise by Michael Fey

State-owned Forests: Forever Wild by Wayne Jones

Commissioner's Choice: Brookfield Woods by Wells Horton

Campaign Highlights

  • The official U.S. celebration of IYOF, “Celebrate Forests. Celebrate Life.” launched on March 1, 2011 in DC.
  • 115 events were held in 34 states and 1 territory.
  • Two states and one town made official IYOF proclamations.
  • First Annual National Walk in the Woods Day was held on May 21, 2011.
  • IYOF Photography Fellow visits 6 states and is documented in Huffington Post and Grist.
  • UNEP and UN Ambassador Don Cheadle creates "Supporting Forests" PSA.
